The sockeye salmon—Haanux̂—is the ubiquitous presence in the Alaska Native subsistence life. My family has spent generations harvesting haanux̂ from the icy waters of Bristol Bay, and wrote this poem while reflecting on the wisdom of a salmon’s instincts. A salmon lesson.
I know when to swim
upstream
pushing through
the current
called by an invisible
siren
home
and I know
when to let my body
be carried by the waves
weightless
and effortlessly
gliding
