Being in Alaska for the Iditarod was truly wonderful. Going to the Iditarod ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage, and taking part in the Fur Rendezvous festivities was a huge part of my childhood. It's such a time of celebration for Alaskans, in the midst of winter's frozen grip. Some of my favorite memories as a kid involve Fur Rondy and the Iditarod. Riding on carnival rides bundled up in all our winter snow gear, seeing all the giant snow and ice sculptures created for competitions, finding dog booties in the snow and squirreling them away like precious treasures. Since college it's been hard to get back to town for the festivities. Spring Break never lined up with the Iditarod or Rondy, but now that I'm out of school I realized that there wasn't really much keeping me from going back this year. Since becoming a better photographer in the last few years I started to dream of shooting the Iditarod and capturing such a special part of my life photographically.
I'll be sharing more Iditarod stories and photos later, but these photos were also some that I really wanted to take while I was home. This is my Grandma's parka. She was a nurse midwife who did her nursing school at Johns Hopkins in the 40's, and went on to do her midwife training with the Frontier Nursing Service in the Kentucky backcountry. FNS provided midwife services to people who lived too far in the backcountry to be able to make it to a medical center for their prenatal care and delivery, and the nurses would ride on horseback for dozens of miles to reach their patients. After she finished her training as a nurse midwife she was hired by the territory of Alaska to create training materials and personally train native women in remote villages how to safely deliver babies and avoid fatal problems during childbirth, as there was a very high infant and mother mortality rate in villages at the time. She drove up to Alaska in her Jeep with just her dog, Rusty, and one of her good girlfriends the first year the AlCan highway was open to civilians.

This coat was the parka she would wear while going out to the villages to train women to become midwives. She traveled by small plane, boat, and dog sled to get to the remote native villages and this coat kept her warm, but not too hot, and the wolverine fur ruff was specifically chosen because it doesn't frost up. It was so special to be wearing this coat while surrounded by so many parts of my Alaskan upbringing and heritage. I actually got choked up a few times because I was so overwhelmed with feelings of nostalgia, thankfulness, and the sense of being truly home in so many ways. This coat is one of the most beautiful things I've ever worn. Who I am and where I came from are sewn into the seams. I've always felt like wearing vintage was special because of the history imbued into the fabric, but it's so much more the case when it's your own personal family history.

remix archives // spike jacket

After drooling over this jacket for months and months, I saw it go on final sale and knew I had to snatch it up. I like to get pieces that I know I'll be able to remix a lot and that are more versatile, so when I initially bought it I was thinking it'd be more of a special statement piece, but holy cow have I gotten a ton of wear out of it. Besides my big winter coat (the one in my last outfit post), this jacket is my most worn outerwear piece. Nearly every time I go out wearing it I get at least one comment about how awesome it is! I tend to wear it with more edgy looks, but I've worn it with more bohemian and feminine outfits as well and like the juxtaposition that it brings in those situations. I wish I could say that it's still for sale, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere else after it sold out at ModCloth. The perfect cropped black moto jacket is definitely something that's on my wardrobe staple list, and I've been looking for the perfect one for years and years. I think I've finally found my jacket soulmate in this one.

wild child

No matter how long I live in a more urban environment I think I'll always feel most at home in nature. Last week, when I was still in Tacoma, I was having a terrible time trying to fall asleep and found myself wandering out to the living room to stare out the window, something I used to frequently do during bouts of insomnia when I lived in Anchorage. I'd walk to the back window in the kitchen and stare out across the back yard and lake, everything so quiet and calm in the wee hours of the morning. Staring out across the lamplit street in Tacoma isn't quite as relaxing as those nights looking over a moonlit lake, nothing astir and only a few visible lights on distant homes. One of my favorite things about Anchorage is how much nature is present even in the middle of the biggest city in Alaska. I need only walk 20 feet from the back door and I'm amidst stands of evergreen and birch trees, blanketed in snow.

homecoming

It seems like one of the first things that happens once I get a new dress is that I remix it with this plaid top. I've probably worn this top with nearly everything in my closet by now. It's starting to wear down a little bit and I should probably start a quest to find a replacement for the inevitable day that I'll have to retire this one. I actually brought tights to wear with this ensemble but it turned out to be warm enough to go tights-less. Of course after the sun set the temperatures dropped and I was rather chilly walking downtown, so I won't make that mistake again. It's been wonderful being home. Today my mom and I went to get pedicures (a treat! I never get my nails done), and in a few minutes we're going to yoga together at a studio we've never been to here in Anchorage! My parents just got back from vacation and my mom did yoga nearly every day there, so it'll be fun to do it with her! I haven't done yoga in over a week so I'm glad to have a chance to get in some mat time before getting back to my normal routine back in Tacoma. As for the Iditarod, I've taken about 2,000 photos so far and my laptop is painfully slow at editing photos, so it might be a few days before I can share some, but it was so much fun to get out there again and experience something that was such a huge part of my childhood. I got so nostalgic and a little verklempt more than a few times. I've also been able to catch up with some friends that I haven't seen in a while, so that was also wonderful. Coming home is such a breath of fresh air!

diy mobile magazine

Hi guys! I'm partnering with a super awesome company who is working on making a mobile magazine platform called Luca where you can create your own little magazines! These little magazines are an awesome way to share blog content on mobile devices like iPads and smartphones where you can flip through just by swiping, like a magazine! For my first "Luca" magazine I thought it'd be fun to put together a little magazine of some of my favorite easy DIY projects, which you can find here. It's mainly formatted for mobile (but it also works on a normal computer too), so grab your phone or tablet and flip through! Also, since we're still working out the kinks, let me know if there's anything that you think would make the magazine make more sense in how you navigate, etc. I'm planning on making a few more Luca (maybe a recipe booklet, hair and makeup tutorial booklet, etc), so if you have anything from the blog that you'd like to see compiled into a little mobile magazine, let me know! I'm excited for Luca get all the final touches so it can officially launch, I think it'll be a great way to create packets of content for readers. I'm currently putting together an Anchorage city travel guide and I think a Luca mobile magazine would be the perfect platform for something like a city travel guide!

Women's Work Wayzgoose 2026 Steamroller Print

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Tacoma Works, a celebration of the labor history of Tacoma, labor solidarity, Tacoma industry, and what work in Tacoma looks like.

As I thought about the theme, I realized I wanted to highlight the unpaid labor that women do, all the work that doesn't get acknowledged as “real work" and goes uncompensated but quietly forms the backbone of society. Care work, cooking and cleaning, household management, pregnancy and child rearing, carrying the emotional and mental load, etc.

I wanted to use the imagery of a quilt because this devaluing of "women's work" has extended into the art world by deeming mediums historically associated with women as merely "craft" - lots of fiber art, quilting, embroidery: highly skilled and artistically incredible work that wasn't considered "fine art."

Women's work is the thread that stitches everything together. It's the thread that goes unnoticed and under appreciated, but without it, everything would fall apart.

When I say “women’s work” I don’t mean that only women engage in these types of work, but historically these types of unpaid labor have fallen vastly upon women. I also don’t mean that women don’t or haven’t engaged in paid labor and industry throughout Tacoma’s history, they obviously have. To me, “women’s work” is the phrase that embodies how we devalue certain types of labor typically associated with women, and can extend into forms of paid labor— why is it that teachers are so underpaid in our society? Could it have anything to do with teaching having been a workforce of primarily women historically?

So when we talk about women’s work we’re talking about things like care work, elder care, feeding a family, procuring groceries, household management, keeping a home clean and stocked, rearing children, pregnancy, birthing and breastfeeding, emotional labor, mental load, community building and organizing. Without these forms of “women’s work” our society would unravel.

Women's work is work. The labor and industry history in Tacoma could not have happened without the women in the background supporting it all with the work they did that wasn't considered real work.

Tacoma Works because Women Work.

On the last day of my artist residency in Sitka, my kiddo’s homesickness hit its peak. We’d been away from home for almost a month and they didn’t want me to leave that morning to go to the museum. So I invited them to come with me and told them I’d draw them a goose— sometimes I call them “goose” which I think was initially a shortening of “silly goose” but now I just use Goose.

This print came out of that drawing. Two hugging geese— mom and child, lovers, friends. For me, this is a depiction of me and Jack, but for you? Who is your goose who needs a hug that feels like home?

Giclée print reproduction of the original linoleum relief print. This is not an original relief print. Because size and pricing can be prohibitive on a larger print such as the original print, I wanted to offer a reproduction giclée version in a couple sizes slightly smaller than the original.

This print was inspired by a dream I had shortly before leaving for Sitka. In the dream I swam all the way from Tacoma to Sitka, then upon arriving in Sitka I was out on a spit of land across the water from town and a huge tsunami wave tossed me into the sea. I was tumbling underwater, the ocean was opaque from the wave kicking up silt, and I realized I couldn’t tell up from down to find the surface and was going to drown, alone beneath the waves. I woke up in a start— it was one of those almost-too-real dreams that had you wake with your heart racing. Later that day I was ruminating on the dream and realized that while I felt alone underwater because I couldn’t see anything, I wasn’t actually alone. I was surrounded by kin: Salmon guiding me to the headwaters of a stream, kelp growing towards upwards to guide me to the surface, seals who could pull me along.

I spent the first week of my residency carving the linoleum, then we got our steamroller rental delivered and printed! The steamroller was a little smaller than the ones we use for Wayzgoose so I wasn’t sure if it would be heavy enough, but it worked perfectly and we ended up with nine prints. So many people came out to watch and it was such a blast getting to do another steamroller print!

What is a giclée print?

Giclée printing (pronounced zhee-clay) is a type of inkjet printing, but not all inkjet prints are giclée prints. The intention of giclée printing is to produce a product at a higher quality and with a longer lifespan than a standard desktop inkjet printer. For a giclée print, the paper must be of archival quality. The biggest difference between a standard inkjet print and a giclee print is that giclées are printed using pigment-based inks rather than dye-based inks that are found in lower-cost inkjets. Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan: they can last anywhere from 100 - 200 years without significant fading.

The sockeye salmon—Haanux̂—is the ubiquitous presence in the Alaska Native subsistence life. My family has spent generations harvesting haanux̂ from the icy waters of Bristol Bay, and wrote this poem while reflecting on the wisdom of a salmon’s instincts. A salmon lesson.

The raven is a creature of myth and magic, mischief and majesty. These talkative and playful corvids punctuate my time spent in Alaska, croaking to one another as I pad through moss-filled ancient forests. This print connects the Raven to her habitat— Kelp strewn on rocky southeast beaches, salmonberries and ferns tangled beneath pines, and the punctuation of bright fuchsia fireweed against grey skies. The Wayzgoose theme this year was Make Some Noise, a celebration of the music of Tacoma, bands from Tacoma, songs about Tacoma, and music venues in Tacoma. It was so fun seeing all the different interpretations of the theme. Here’s mine:

“Where’s that confounded bridge?” Led Zeppelin’s The Crunge’s final lyrics ask. What is a song’s bridge? A musical change of pace, intended to provide contrast to the rest of the composition. Here in the Northwest we’re the bridge. We’re not the fancy metropolitan city of Seattle, we’re not a densely wooded small town or coastal hamlet, and we aren’t rolling fields of agricultural land. We’re something different. Something gritty and creative. We’ve got a little bit of funk to us, and I’m not just talking about the aroma. We strut to the beat of our own rhythm. Blue collar, grunge, and art all steeped together under the watchful eye of our namesake peak.

And then there’s the bridge, or should I say bridges. We’re perched on our peninsula jutting out into the Puget sound, anchored on west and east by bridges— Tacoma Narrows, Murray Morgan, and the E 21st St bridge.

In this piece I wanted to share a poem about the music of Tacoma, it’s people, it’s land, the interweaving of everything we hear when we close our eyes in the middle of the city. Tacoma has birthed many amazing artists, some nationally known, like Neko Case, some with cult Tacoma followings, like Girl Trouble— but I like to think we are all a part of the song of Tacoma, being sung throughout the ages as we build our lives between bridges in this little gritty city, “a dusty old jewel on the south Puget Sound.”

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Sweet and Salty. There are so many ways in which Tacoma is both Sweet and Salty. Her people are the salt of the earth. She's nestled within the salty waters of the Puget Sound. Folks here feel a little salty about Tacoma changing— "Keep Tacoma Feared" is the refrain to maintain a Tacoma that’s an underdog, a sweet secret that only her residents could truly appreciate.

For those of us who call Tacoma "home," it's a sweet place filled with a vibrant creative community, balanced against the contrast of a salt-of-the-earth blue collar community often symbolized by our bustling seaport.

That's what this piece represents. Gritty Tacoma, sweet and salty, arts and labor, a little rough around the edges, but a sweet treasure we call home.
