I don't have much to say, but I'm tired of staring at a blinking cursor with nothing to say while these photos languish in a sad little draft, so here is an outfit I wore a couple weeks ago! Also, this is the last outfit you'll see with red hair. Just a tease!

ey Guys! Today I've partnered up with Ruche for their fun Frocktober campaign! Ruche is celebrating dresses all month and I decided to get a little glam for my style. After spending the weekend at BurlyCon I'm coming down from a glam-high, so it only seemed appropriate! When I first saw this dress at Ruche I wasn't sure how sparkly the top would be but I love that it's even more sparkly in person than it is in the photos on their website! I've been embracing sparkle more these days, perhaps due to my incursion into the burlesque scene. I've always been more of the kind of girl to eschew sparkly, "girly" things. I grew up as a dyed in the wool tomboy who almost exclusively hung out with the guys. I never wanted to be associated with anything girly or super femme. I felt like girls got stuck in a girly box that was full of pink and glitter and weakness and I wanted nothing to do with it. Now that I'm older I've ben exploring more feminine styles over the years, enjoying the fact that I can swing from one style to another, from ultra glam, to masculine, to casual, and continue to be authentically, wholly myself. I love that being a girl means, well, nothing really. It doesn't mean anything except that I'm a human and that I get to express myself however I want, regardless of my gender or sex. I now feel free to be glittery or butch without feeling boxed it, and it's awesome.

I'm not heavily into the burlesque or alternative scene yet so I almost felt like an outsider peeking into a world I'm not really a part of yet. It was cool to see so many iterations of feminine and masculine, and yet everyone there was (or is working towards being) a burlesque performer. Everyone from the most flamboyant boylesque guys to mousy, quiet, and unassuming girls. From fully tattooed gals with pink hair, to plain janes. And everyone in between. It seems like burlesque means something different to each and every person. It's vulnerable and bold, both hiding and exposing parts of oneself. In a lot of ways sometimes blogging feels a bit like burlesque. Choosing which parts of myself I expose to my audience. How much I take off, which styles I choose to portray in each post, how much I say or don't say. Blogging is a sort of internet burlesque. Sometimes it's a tease with the audience, sometimes it's more raw than we even realize.

natural perfume workshop!

ey guys! I had so much fun doing my first perfume workshop, I've partnered up with Embellish Multispace Salon here in Tacoma to host another! It will be on Saturday, Oct 25th, at the Salon! It was so awesome smelling all the scents people came up with at the last workshop, I'm excited to be able to do another workshop. As I mentioned before I've never liked perfume, and kind of hate most perfumes I've sampled at stores like Macy's and Nordstrom's perfume counters. Normal perfume is so strong, often will give me a headache, and I feel like it smells more like chemicals than any of the notes they list on the bottle. I love perfumes made with essential oils because not only are they natural, they don't stay super strong for hours after you put them on. They're stronger when you sniff them straight out of the bottle and right when you put it on, but they mellow out while you wear them and have a pleasant smell that doesn't intoxicate a room for minutes after you leave, like I've found many typical perfumes to do (I always feel like Spongebob running through the perfume department after someone walks by with strong perfume or cologne). The scents play off of one another, integrate into one another, and change with your personal body chemistry once you apply them.
I also have a really hard time finding scents that I love. I enjoy maybe 1% of the perfumes I've smelled at a perfume counter. I enjoy scents that are spicier and citrusy, or more woodsy, and a bit masculine. Most perfumes I've encountered tend to be super heavy on the florals and have more of a chemical smell than anything I'd prefer. The great thing about making your own perfume is that you get to choose your own scent profile when you make your own! Right now I'm scheming up a Bergamot/Lemongrass based signature scent...
The other awesome thing about using essential oils for your perfume? You can craft your perfume to support your health! Essential oils can be an amazing way to stay healthy, balance hormones, and regulate emotions, so you're doing the body good and smelling awesome too.

who what wear

ou guys, I think I'm going to live in this cardigan this fall and winter. Since it came in the mail I've worn it almost every day. I know the celeb mags always talk about what a faux pas it is to wear the same outfit or piece more than once, but in my mind if I want to wear something every day I feel like it makes that item so worth it. I know I've already worn this once in the past month, but it's definitely going to be on the blog quite a bit more, guaranteed.

I care less about personal style these days than I have in probably the whole time I've been blogging. It's not that I don't enjoy personal style, but in the past it was much more intentional, mostly because I was in the process of really learning what my own style was, what I liked, what I felt great wearing. But now I'm to a point where I really feel totally comfortable, whether I'm all gussied up or if I'm just wearing jeans and a tee. I think that probably makes up for a less interesting style blog, but it definitely makes me feel great to have total confidence in what makes me feel good to wear.

It's so crazy how much blogging has changed since I first started in 2008. I remember religiously uploading my outfits to Chictopia and Lookbook, but over the years it's become harder to keep up with the networking sites like those. I was recently contacted by WEAR to check out their new style sharing app and I realized how interesting it is now with mobile platforms and being able to upload photos directly from phones and tablets! In some ways mobile platforms have made sharing so much easier than it used to be, sharing a quick instagram is so much faster than writing a whole blog post. I feel like I didn't graduate university all that long ago, but my graphic design classes are already out of date because mobile platforms were only barely starting to become a thing back then! Pretty cool eh? Blogs and style networking sites were a huge part of helping me develop my own personal style back in the early days of the blog, so it's fun to see new communities popping up where people can be inspired to explore new styles.

When the Keil family asked me to do their family photos last year I was pretty excited. I'd done their photos back in 2012, and it was super fun to see little Simon so grown up since then! Lillian was about 8 months pregnant during this shoot so they're now a family of four! Their new son is named Porter, so hopefully I'll have the chance to shoot their family again this year with the new addition! Jason's family was in town so we got to do some with his whole family, as well as some couple shots of just Jason and Lillian, and some individual portraits of everyone!
Even though this shoot was in December I was excited that there were stills some fall leaves lingering in the park. I love the color and texture of fall leaves, and it was a great distraction for Simon to play in the leaves when he was starting to get exasperated with the photo-taking experience, like most kids eventually do.
Lillian actually writes a blog and I was super inspired by one of her recent posts. It's always wonderful to read articles by real women who are embracing their bodies and struggling through what that means.

Women's Work Wayzgoose 2026 Steamroller Print

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Tacoma Works, a celebration of the labor history of Tacoma, labor solidarity, Tacoma industry, and what work in Tacoma looks like.

As I thought about the theme, I realized I wanted to highlight the unpaid labor that women do, all the work that doesn't get acknowledged as “real work" and goes uncompensated but quietly forms the backbone of society. Care work, cooking and cleaning, household management, pregnancy and child rearing, carrying the emotional and mental load, etc.

I wanted to use the imagery of a quilt because this devaluing of "women's work" has extended into the art world by deeming mediums historically associated with women as merely "craft" - lots of fiber art, quilting, embroidery: highly skilled and artistically incredible work that wasn't considered "fine art."

Women's work is the thread that stitches everything together. It's the thread that goes unnoticed and under appreciated, but without it, everything would fall apart.

When I say “women’s work” I don’t mean that only women engage in these types of work, but historically these types of unpaid labor have fallen vastly upon women. I also don’t mean that women don’t or haven’t engaged in paid labor and industry throughout Tacoma’s history, they obviously have. To me, “women’s work” is the phrase that embodies how we devalue certain types of labor typically associated with women, and can extend into forms of paid labor— why is it that teachers are so underpaid in our society? Could it have anything to do with teaching having been a workforce of primarily women historically?

So when we talk about women’s work we’re talking about things like care work, elder care, feeding a family, procuring groceries, household management, keeping a home clean and stocked, rearing children, pregnancy, birthing and breastfeeding, emotional labor, mental load, community building and organizing. Without these forms of “women’s work” our society would unravel.

Women's work is work. The labor and industry history in Tacoma could not have happened without the women in the background supporting it all with the work they did that wasn't considered real work.

Tacoma Works because Women Work.

On the last day of my artist residency in Sitka, my kiddo’s homesickness hit its peak. We’d been away from home for almost a month and they didn’t want me to leave that morning to go to the museum. So I invited them to come with me and told them I’d draw them a goose— sometimes I call them “goose” which I think was initially a shortening of “silly goose” but now I just use Goose.

This print came out of that drawing. Two hugging geese— mom and child, lovers, friends. For me, this is a depiction of me and Jack, but for you? Who is your goose who needs a hug that feels like home?

Sea Kin Giclée Print

Giclée print reproduction of the original linoleum relief print. This is not an original relief print. Because size and pricing can be prohibitive on a larger print such as the original print, I wanted to offer a reproduction giclée version in a couple sizes slightly smaller than the original.

This print was inspired by a dream I had shortly before leaving for Sitka. In the dream I swam all the way from Tacoma to Sitka, then upon arriving in Sitka I was out on a spit of land across the water from town and a huge tsunami wave tossed me into the sea. I was tumbling underwater, the ocean was opaque from the wave kicking up silt, and I realized I couldn’t tell up from down to find the surface and was going to drown, alone beneath the waves. I woke up in a start— it was one of those almost-too-real dreams that had you wake with your heart racing. Later that day I was ruminating on the dream and realized that while I felt alone underwater because I couldn’t see anything, I wasn’t actually alone. I was surrounded by kin: Salmon guiding me to the headwaters of a stream, kelp growing towards upwards to guide me to the surface, seals who could pull me along.

I spent the first week of my residency carving the linoleum, then we got our steamroller rental delivered and printed! The steamroller was a little smaller than the ones we use for Wayzgoose so I wasn’t sure if it would be heavy enough, but it worked perfectly and we ended up with nine prints. So many people came out to watch and it was such a blast getting to do another steamroller print!

What is a giclée print?

Giclée printing (pronounced zhee-clay) is a type of inkjet printing, but not all inkjet prints are giclée prints. The intention of giclée printing is to produce a product at a higher quality and with a longer lifespan than a standard desktop inkjet printer. For a giclée print, the paper must be of archival quality. The biggest difference between a standard inkjet print and a giclee print is that giclées are printed using pigment-based inks rather than dye-based inks that are found in lower-cost inkjets. Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan: they can last anywhere from 100 - 200 years without significant fading.

The sockeye salmon—Haanux̂—is the ubiquitous presence in the Alaska Native subsistence life. My family has spent generations harvesting haanux̂ from the icy waters of Bristol Bay, and wrote this poem while reflecting on the wisdom of a salmon’s instincts. A salmon lesson.

The raven is a creature of myth and magic, mischief and majesty. These talkative and playful corvids punctuate my time spent in Alaska, croaking to one another as I pad through moss-filled ancient forests. This print connects the Raven to her habitat— Kelp strewn on rocky southeast beaches, salmonberries and ferns tangled beneath pines, and the punctuation of bright fuchsia fireweed against grey skies. They talk to me and I talk back. Qanglaaĝix̂— Raven.

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Make Some Noise, a celebration of the music of Tacoma, bands from Tacoma, songs about Tacoma, and music venues in Tacoma. It was so fun seeing all the different interpretations of the theme. Here’s mine:

“Where’s that confounded bridge?” Led Zeppelin’s The Crunge’s final lyrics ask. What is a song’s bridge? A musical change of pace, intended to provide contrast to the rest of the composition. Here in the Northwest we’re the bridge. We’re not the fancy metropolitan city of Seattle, we’re not a densely wooded small town or coastal hamlet, and we aren’t rolling fields of agricultural land. We’re something different. Something gritty and creative. We’ve got a little bit of funk to us, and I’m not just talking about the aroma. We strut to the beat of our own rhythm. Blue collar, grunge, and art all steeped together under the watchful eye of our namesake peak.

And then there’s the bridge, or should I say bridges. We’re perched on our peninsula jutting out into the Puget sound, anchored on west and east by bridges— Tacoma Narrows, Murray Morgan, and the E 21st St bridge.

In this piece I wanted to share a poem about the music of Tacoma, it’s people, it’s land, the interweaving of everything we hear when we close our eyes in the middle of the city. Tacoma has birthed many amazing artists, some nationally known, like Neko Case, some with cult Tacoma followings, like Girl Trouble— but I like to think we are all a part of the song of Tacoma, being sung throughout the ages as we build our lives between bridges in this little gritty city, “a dusty old jewel on the south Puget Sound.”

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Sweet and Salty. There are so many ways in which Tacoma is both Sweet and Salty. Her people are the salt of the earth. She's nestled within the salty waters of the Puget Sound. Folks here feel a little salty about Tacoma changing— "Keep Tacoma Feared" is the refrain to maintain a Tacoma that’s an underdog, a sweet secret that only her residents could truly appreciate.

For those of us who call Tacoma "home," it's a sweet place filled with a vibrant creative community, balanced against the contrast of a salt-of-the-earth blue collar community often symbolized by our bustling seaport.

That's what this piece represents. Gritty Tacoma, sweet and salty, arts and labor, a little rough around the edges, but a sweet treasure we call home.
