he story of these jeans goes all the way back to my very first year of blogging, actually the first few months! Back then I didn't really do a lot of outfit posts yet, but I did a lot of sharing style images that really inspired me. One of the outfits I fell in love with was this one shot from a Nylon magazine spread that I'm sure I found somewhere online of an actress wearing the most perfect outfit featuring gold painted jeans. I was smitten and desperately wanted a pair, but couldn't find them anywhere, and I'm sure the pair they had in the magazine shoot were designer jeans that were well outside of my college student budget. I had thoughts of DIYing them, but I never did and sort of forgot about it. Flash forward SIX years and I'm browsing through ModCloth and lo and behold... I scroll to the jeans. Like, these are them you guys, they look exactly the same. And bonus: they're my absolute favorite brand of jeans, Angry Rabbit! I have two other jeans by them, both high waisted, which fit like a dream and when I got these I didn't even realize they were Angry Rabbit until I looked at the label. Gold jeans can't be practical right? Wrong. I've worn these jeans probably 4 times since getting them, and they're actually so perfect for holiday parties right now. They feel sexy and festive, but still a bit casual and definitely rock and roll.

I look at that post where I shared the image from Nylon and I love the vibe of all the images. I think some people see finding personal style as an end goal, but I think the whole process is what's cool. How all your influences, past and present, shape how you want to dress. It's funny thinking back to 8th grade me, who really wanted blue hair, but didn't want to have to bleach her hair to achieve it. By 9th grade my high school had changed the dress code so no "unnatural" hair colors were allowed and I gave up on my blue hair dreams, but here I am now, at 28, rocking some blue(ish) hair! Sometimes we feel like totally different people compared to our younger selves, but sometimes it's bizarre how much we stay the same. And speaking of staying the same, look who has two thumbs and cut bangs again! This girl.

contacted me seeing if I'd be interested in doing a painting project in collaboration with them, I knew this was the perfect time to finally finish my living room! I love how it turned out! It's clean and neat, and a statement but not visually overwhelming. I picked some muted, pastel

Behr® paint

colors so it wasn't too bold. I'd already painted the door bright yellow so I wasn't sure if the muted colors would clash, but I love how the door stands out and is still in the same color family as the yellow hexagons.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Decide on your pattern. I used photoshop to mock up how I wanted my design to look on the wall and which colors would go in each hexagon. This also helped determine how big I wanted to make my hexagon template.

2. Create your hexagon template. It's pretty easy to make a hexagon, but you'll want to make sure it's pretty close to perfect so that your pattern doesn't get wonky. I used

this super easy little tutorial

with a makeshift compass. My hexagon ended up being 13 inches from tip to opposite tip (diameter of the original circle drawn). Cut the template out of some cardboard or other sturdy material to trace around.

3. Draw the outlines to the hexagons using a pencil. Make sure your hexagons are level. I leveled the first one and then outlined about 4 or 5 and checked the level again, just to make sure I wasn't getting off level. In each hexagon I lightly wrote the color that would be painted inside.

4. Using your

ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape

, outline the hexagons that aren't directly next to each other. Since these hexagons are directly butting up against each other, you'll have to wait for the paint to dry so you can mask off the one next to it. I masked as many hexagons as possible and painted the color that was written inside using my Behr paint. Each hexagon got two coats of paint.

5. Because I had to wait for each hexagon to dry before taping the one next to it, this project took a little longer, but I'm super happy with how it looks. As soon as I painted the second coat on a hexagon I'd remove the tape and allow it to dry. This project took three days to complete with the time required to wait for paint to dry. I let the paint dry about 2 hours between coats, as recommended by

be in comparison to the regular painters tape I usually use, but I was super happy with how precise my edges were. I didn't have to fix any leaks and the edges were

five homemade christmas treats!

t's Christmas week! That's totally a thing right? Christmas week? It's like how you get a whole week for your birthday, right? Right. Since I'm sure we'll all be indulging in a few seasonal treats this next week I thought I'd share some of my favorite holiday recipes from Christmases past. Do you have a favorite holiday treat? When I was a kid we used to get these Santa cookies every year from one of my grandparents' good friends. Each year she'd make these big Santa sugar cookies and frosted them with some delicious frosting to look just like Santa. I always loved opening the package from her and getting our yearly Santa cookie. There's just nothing quite like a home baked goodie. People say that they can taste the love baked in, which can sound silly, but sometimes I think it's true.
Nowadays I'd say that my favorite holiday treats are boozy holiday beverages. One of my favorites this year has been Mulled Cider with a splash of whiskey. Hot Buttered Rum and Eggnog are also some great drinks and adding peppermint schnapps to hot cocoa is one of our holiday traditions!

t's been funny living in the Tacoma area because there are quite a few friends from college who are from this area and have subsequently moved back after graduating. Dan and I learned that Jeremy and Lauren had moved to Tacoma recently so it was a really fun session getting to catch up and learn what they were up to nowadays. We weren't super good friends in college, Jeremy and I were in the same dorm freshman year, but it was a small school, so you were pretty familiar with everyone. It was fun seeing these two as parents, and little Charlotte was a hoot!
When we had their Session Debut at their house, both Lauren and Jeremy's parents came over to see the images we made at their session and it was really fun! I bring a tasty locally made dessert to all my Session Debuts, and Lauren's mom brought some champagne, so it really felt like a little Christmas celebration! It's so fun to have parents at a family session debut, you can just see the pride in their eyes looking at their kids all grown up and becoming parents themselves. Both parents ended up getting some prints too, which I loved!

WED // tropical kihei maui bridal inspiration

hen I found out we were going to Hawai'i, I got excited about wearing pretty summery dresses and as I was shopping around for some dresses to wear, I happened upon this one. It was too fancy to be a casual sundress, but I thought it'd look perfect in Hawai'i and got the idea to pull together a fun little faux bridal photoshoot. I wanted to have some tropical wedding photos in my portfolio because it's be pretty dang rad to travel to a tropical location to shoot a wedding. Right where I did the shoot there are actually real weddings all the time! I saw at least three weddings on the beach at the same spot where these shots were taken! I can't blame people, It's so gorgeous, especially right at sunset. We spent every sunset down at the beach with a drink in hand and watch the sun dip into the ocean.
I wanted an ethereal and a little bit vintage vibe, but with a tropical twist. I made the bouquet from $28 worth of flowers from Safeway and masking tape, the crown is one I made this summer and brought with me. The dress is from ModCloth and I had it altered to fit me just right (and short girls, take note! I didn't cut any length off, so I think it might be intended as a tea length, but it was the perfect length for my 5'1" frame when I was barefoot). I knew I'd still have green hair, which didn't fit the look I was going for, so I took my black curly wig, added some curled extensions and it was perfect! It's funny to think that the last time I was in Hawai'i this is what my real hair looked like!

The dress is actually a bit of a light tan/nude color, and I loved how it matched the sand and how it glowed when the evening sun filtered through it! With my black hair matching the volcanic rocks and the dress matching the sand, I unintentionally matched my location pretty well!
Since the trip was kind of our anniversary vacation, it was fun to get all "brided up" again and feel fancy. I think women should be able to get fancy more often, especially us grown up ladies. I mean, you have prom or homecoming as a teen and then a wedding, but after that there aren't a ton of opportunities to get super fancy. And I think sometimes we feel self centered or vain getting dolled up, but I say screw that. You're allowed to feel pretty and get done up if it makes you feel awesome. I have a friend in Tacoma who does amazing boudoir shoots and I love how it makes her clients feel like bombshells. I think we sometimes need more glamour in our lives, and if your life isn't full of glamour naturally (which is where most of us exist, I imagine), you gotta make your own!
Something that I love about burlesque's influence on my life is that it's made me love wigs even more. The other night I was going out to a show in Seattle with my burly-gals and I had zero time to make my hair do anything cute, so I just grabbed this wig, gave it a little twist into a side ponytail type thing, slapped on a Swarovski headband and I was ready to go! The cheap wigs you get at the thrift store for Halloween aren't what you want, though. Invest in one or two higher quality wigs and you're good to go! The extensions I put in this one were a lot straighter than the curls of wig, so I just wet them down, put them in perm rods overnight until the hair was totally dry and voilà! They perfectly matched the curl of the wig. I'm eventually going back to black for my real hair color, so I think I might grab myself a redhead wig to keep me from wanting to dye my hair again!

Women's Work Wayzgoose 2026 Steamroller Print

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Tacoma Works, a celebration of the labor history of Tacoma, labor solidarity, Tacoma industry, and what work in Tacoma looks like.

As I thought about the theme, I realized I wanted to highlight the unpaid labor that women do, all the work that doesn't get acknowledged as “real work" and goes uncompensated but quietly forms the backbone of society. Care work, cooking and cleaning, household management, pregnancy and child rearing, carrying the emotional and mental load, etc.

I wanted to use the imagery of a quilt because this devaluing of "women's work" has extended into the art world by deeming mediums historically associated with women as merely "craft" - lots of fiber art, quilting, embroidery: highly skilled and artistically incredible work that wasn't considered "fine art."

Women's work is the thread that stitches everything together. It's the thread that goes unnoticed and under appreciated, but without it, everything would fall apart.

When I say “women’s work” I don’t mean that only women engage in these types of work, but historically these types of unpaid labor have fallen vastly upon women. I also don’t mean that women don’t or haven’t engaged in paid labor and industry throughout Tacoma’s history, they obviously have. To me, “women’s work” is the phrase that embodies how we devalue certain types of labor typically associated with women, and can extend into forms of paid labor— why is it that teachers are so underpaid in our society? Could it have anything to do with teaching having been a workforce of primarily women historically?

So when we talk about women’s work we’re talking about things like care work, elder care, feeding a family, procuring groceries, household management, keeping a home clean and stocked, rearing children, pregnancy, birthing and breastfeeding, emotional labor, mental load, community building and organizing. Without these forms of “women’s work” our society would unravel.

Women's work is work. The labor and industry history in Tacoma could not have happened without the women in the background supporting it all with the work they did that wasn't considered real work.

Tacoma Works because Women Work.

On the last day of my artist residency in Sitka, my kiddo’s homesickness hit its peak. We’d been away from home for almost a month and they didn’t want me to leave that morning to go to the museum. So I invited them to come with me and told them I’d draw them a goose— sometimes I call them “goose” which I think was initially a shortening of “silly goose” but now I just use Goose.

This print came out of that drawing. Two hugging geese— mom and child, lovers, friends. For me, this is a depiction of me and Jack, but for you? Who is your goose who needs a hug that feels like home?

This print was inspired by a dream I had shortly before leaving for Sitka. In the dream I swam all the way from Tacoma to Sitka, then upon arriving in Sitka I was out on a spit of land across the water from town and a huge tsunami wave tossed me into the sea. I was tumbling underwater, the ocean was opaque from the wave kicking up silt, and I realized I couldn’t tell up from down to find the surface and was going to drown, alone beneath the waves. I woke up in a start— it was one of those almost-too-real dreams that had you wake with your heart racing. Later that day I was ruminating on the dream and realized that while I felt alone underwater because I couldn’t see anything, I wasn’t actually alone. I was surrounded by kin: Salmon guiding me to the headwaters of a stream, kelp growing towards upwards to guide me to the surface, seals who could pull me along.

I spent the first week of my residency carving the linoleum, then we got our steamroller rental delivered and printed! The steamroller was a little smaller than the ones we use for Wayzgoose so I wasn’t sure if it would be heavy enough, but it worked perfectly and we ended up with nine prints. So many people came out to watch and it was such a blast getting to do another steamroller print!

What is a giclée print?

Giclée printing (pronounced zhee-clay) is a type of inkjet printing, but not all inkjet prints are giclée prints. The intention of giclée printing is to produce a product at a higher quality and with a longer lifespan than a standard desktop inkjet printer. For a giclée print, the paper must be of archival quality. The biggest difference between a standard inkjet print and a giclee print is that giclées are printed using pigment-based inks rather than dye-based inks that are found in lower-cost inkjets. Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan: they can last anywhere from 100 - 200 years without significant fading.

The raven is a creature of myth and magic, mischief and majesty. These talkative and playful corvids punctuate my time spent in Alaska, croaking to one another as I pad through moss-filled ancient forests. This print connects the Raven to her habitat— Kelp strewn on rocky southeast beaches, salmonberries and ferns tangled beneath pines, and the punctuation of bright fuchsia fireweed against grey skies. The Wayzgoose theme this year was Make Some Noise, a celebration of the music of Tacoma, bands from Tacoma, songs about Tacoma, and music venues in Tacoma. It was so fun seeing all the different interpretations of the theme. Here’s mine:

“Where’s that confounded bridge?” Led Zeppelin’s The Crunge’s final lyrics ask. What is a song’s bridge? A musical change of pace, intended to provide contrast to the rest of the composition. Here in the Northwest we’re the bridge. We’re not the fancy metropolitan city of Seattle, we’re not a densely wooded small town or coastal hamlet, and we aren’t rolling fields of agricultural land. We’re something different. Something gritty and creative. We’ve got a little bit of funk to us, and I’m not just talking about the aroma. We strut to the beat of our own rhythm. Blue collar, grunge, and art all steeped together under the watchful eye of our namesake peak.

And then there’s the bridge, or should I say bridges. We’re perched on our peninsula jutting out into the Puget sound, anchored on west and east by bridges— Tacoma Narrows, Murray Morgan, and the E 21st St bridge.

In this piece I wanted to share a poem about the music of Tacoma, it’s people, it’s land, the interweaving of everything we hear when we close our eyes in the middle of the city. Tacoma has birthed many amazing artists, some nationally known, like Neko Case, some with cult Tacoma followings, like Girl Trouble— but I like to think we are all a part of the song of Tacoma, being sung throughout the ages as we build our lives between bridges in this little gritty city, “a dusty old jewel on the south Puget Sound.”

The Wayzgoose theme this year was Sweet and Salty. There are so many ways in which Tacoma is both Sweet and Salty. Her people are the salt of the earth. She's nestled within the salty waters of the Puget Sound. Folks here feel a little salty about Tacoma changing— "Keep Tacoma Feared" is the refrain to maintain a Tacoma that’s an underdog, a sweet secret that only her residents could truly appreciate.

For those of us who call Tacoma "home," it's a sweet place filled with a vibrant creative community, balanced against the contrast of a salt-of-the-earth blue collar community often symbolized by our bustling seaport.

That's what this piece represents. Gritty Tacoma, sweet and salty, arts and labor, a little rough around the edges, but a sweet treasure we call home.
